QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene volleyball team clawed back from a 2-1 deficit to edge Daniel Webster 3-2 Thursday evening at the Lahue Physical Education Center. The Lions improve to 11-13 on the season with the win while the Eagles fall to 7-9 overall.
Kortney Jenkins (Bunker Hill, W.V.) paced the home side with 14 kills, 20 digs and three service aces. Cayla Clinkscale (Winchendon, Mass.) registered 13 kills, eight digs and three blocks on the night.
Hannah Welsh (Derry, N.H.) posted 14 digs and a team-high four aces in the victory. Vanessa Pascal (Marlborough, Mass.) notched 19 digs in the match while Sam Losano (Elverta, Calif.) chipped in with 11 digs.
Rookie setter Lauryl Berger (Laurel, Del.) collected 39 assists and added 10 digs in the winning effort.
Daniel Webster was led by Samantha Betts with 18 kills and 27 digs.
Eastern Nazarene cruised to a 1-0 lead after claiming the opening frame 25-10.
The Eagles bounced back with a 25-10 win in the second set to knot the match at one set each. The visitors captured a one-set advantage with a 25-15 win in the third game.
The Lions eked out a 25-23 decision in the fourth set to force a decisive fifth game. Eastern Nazarene prevailed in the fifth 15-10 to pick up its third consecutive non-conference win.
Daniel Webster raced out to a 4-0 lead in the first game before the hosts rattled off six unanswered points to go ahead by two, 6-4.
The Lions tallied nine straight points to stretch their lead to 23-9. Eastern Nazarene recorded the final two points of the set to gain a 1-0 edge.
The Eagles grabbed a 9-6 lead in the second after a five-point run. Daniel Webster pushed the margin to eight, 18-10, as Betts knocked down a kill.
The home team cut the deficit to three, 22-19, on an ace by Welsh. Daniel Webster closed out the second game with a kill by Betts.
The visitors controlled the third set, maintaining the lead throughout the game.
Eastern Nazarene drew to within three points, 16-13, as Jenkins tacked on a kill.
The Eagles utilized a 9-2 run to seal the win 25-15 and earn a 2-1 advantage.
The fourth frame was closely contested as the Lions netted back-to-back points to garner a 9-7 edge.
The visitors notched six straight points to jump to a 16-12 lead. Eastern Nazarene answered with four points in a row to reclaim a 20-19 advantage.
After Daniel Webster took a 21-20 lead, the Lions tallied two to go up 22-21. The two teams were tied at 22-22 and 23-23 before Eastern Nazarene picked up the final two points of the set, forcing a winner-take-all fifth game. Berger capped off the fourth frame with a clutch ace.
The Lions claimed an early 6-3 advantage in the fifth set and widened the gap to 8-4 on an attacking error by the visitors.
The Eagles trimmed the deficit to three late in the game, 13-10, as Betts registered a kill.
Eastern Nazarene responded with a kill by Welsh and an ace by Jenkins to clinch the come-from-behind victory.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene hosts Mount Ida and Southern Maine in a home tri-match on Homecoming weekend October 19.
