Volleyball Falls in Straight-Sets to UNE, 3-0

QUINCY, Mass. - The Eastern Nazarene College women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 setback Tuesday evening to the University of New England. The Lions slip to 11-14 overall and 1-5 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with the loss. The victory elevates the Nor'easters to 13-6 on the season and 5-2 in league play.
The visitors prevailed 25-20, 25-17 and 25-21 to seal the win.
Eastern Nazarene was led by Cayla Clinkscale (Winchendon, Mass.) with eight kills on the night. Rookie Dana Day (Coarsegold, Calif.) chipped in with seven kills and nine digs. Kori Sorensen (Quincy, Mass.) paced the Lions with 17 digs while Birdina Tuiava (Colorado Springs, Colo.) added 11 digs and 17 assists. Kortney Jenkins (Bunker Hill, W.V.) tallied a team-high two services aces in the contest.
Angie Brunette notched a match-best 10 kills in the win for the University of New England.
In the opening frame, the Nor'easters grabbed a 10-5 lead early on. The hosts cut the deficit to two points, 16-14, before the visitors restored the margin to six, 24-18.
The University of New England seized a 2-0 edge to start the second set and did not relinquish the lead en route to claiming the game 25-17 to jump ahead 2-0 in the match.
The Nor'easters snagged the lead to open the third game but the Lions battled back to capture a 13-10 edge. The visiting side rallied to lead 20-13 after scoring 10 unanswered points.
The Lions fought off five match-point opportunities for the University of New England and clawed back into the game to shrink the gap to three points, 24-21. The Nor'easters were able to tally the deciding point to close out the contest.
