Women’s Tennis Starts GNAC Slate with 7-2 Victory at Regis
WESTON, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis team rolled to a 7-2 win at Regis Saturday afternoon in the program's first-ever Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match.
The Lions improve to 2-0 on the year and 1-0 in conference play with the result. The Pride falls to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in league action with the loss.
Eastern Nazarene nabbed a 2-1 lead after doubles play with victories at the top two positions.
Adele Duval (Redding, Calif.) and Emily Ruttkowski (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany) cruised to an 8-1 win at the No. 1 doubles spot against Ariana McCormack and Katasha Jarvis.
Sharon Biondi (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and Jacquelin Arretche (Los Banos, Calif.) prevailed 8-1 at the second slot over Carly Donovan and Gracie Jarest.
Veronica Jimenez (Lynnfield, Mass.) and Alecia Tubbs (Rochester, N.Y.) suffered an 8-4 setback to Kaeleigh FitzPatrick and Lauren Mogelnicki at the No. 3 position.
The Lions posted five singles wins to claim their first-ever GNAC victory.
Biondi topped McCormack 7-5, 6-1 at the No. 1 singles spot while Ruttkowski earned a 6-0, 6-4 win at the second singles position against Jarvis.
Duval downed Mogelnicki 6-3, 6-4 at the third slot and Jimenez bests Jarest 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot.
Arretche collected a 6-4, 6-3 victory at the fifth position over FitzPatrick in her first action of the season.
Annelise Sherrill (Elk Grove, Calif.) dropped a hard-fought three-set match at the No. 6 slot to Ginger Boodakian. After conceding the first set 6-1, Sherrill battled back to triumph 6-3 in the second set before Boodakian responded with a 6-1 win in the third frame to clinch the victory.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene heads to Albertus Magnus September 10 for a league clash.
