Women’s Tennis Sweeps Mount Ida, 9-0
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene women's tennis team posted a 9-0 victory over Mount Ida in the 2014 season-opener Tuesday afternoon at the ENC Tennis Courts.
The Lions start the fall with a 1-0 overall record while the Mustangs drop to 0-1 on the season.
Eastern Nazarene captured three doubles wins to hold a 3-0 lead at the midway point of the match.
Tressa Burrello (Herkimer, N.Y.) and Lindsey Steelman (Darlington, Md.) prevailed 8-3 at the top doubles spot over Rebecca Levy and Olivia Budney.
Jordan Cressman (Bowmanstown, Pa.) and Alecia Tubbs (Rochester, N.Y.) cruised to an 8-0 victory at the No. 2 position over Patti-Ann Doucette and Victoria Messinger. Hannah Lariviere (Biddeford, Maine) and Bethany Mohnkern (Petersburg, Pa.) topped Yuliana Chairez and Kaytlen Putnam at the third doubles slot.
The hosts picked up six singles victories en route to collecting their first win of the season.
Steelman outlasted Levy in a third-set super-tiebreaker at the No. 1 singles match. The rookie dropped the opening set 6-3 before bouncing back to level the match with a 6-3 win in the second frame. Steelman edged Levy 11-9 in the tiebreaker.
Burrello blanked Budney at the second singles position 6-0, 6-0. Cressman earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the third spot over Doucette.
Tubbs and Mohnkern prevailed in straight-sets at the fourth and fifth slots, respectively. Eastern Nazarene won by default at the No. 6 position to cap off the match.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene will visit Regis September 4 for a non-conference tilt.
