
Women’s Soccer Explodes for 12 Goals in Rout of Wheelock
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's soccer team cruised to an 12-1 win over Wheelock Monday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Eight different players scored as the Lions set a new program-record for goals in a game, besting the previous mark set in 2003.
The Lions elevate to 2-5-0 on the season while the Wildcats drop to 0-8-0 overall.
The home team snagged a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute as Alexis Schmidt (North Smithfield, R.I.) fired her first goal of the season into the back of the net.
Eastern Nazarene doubled its advantage to 2-0 in the 14th minute. Kelly Couite (West Bridgewater, Mass.) netted her fifth score of the season with a left-footed effort.
The Lions chalked up their third goal of the game just one minute later. Schmidt threaded a pass to setup Kyera Bryant (New Haven, Conn.) for a breakaway and the junior dribbled in on goal before slotting a shot inside the left post.
The hosts stretched the lead to 4-0 in the 25th minute as Couite buried her second marker of the match.
Eastern Nazarene widened the gap to 5-0 moments later. Melodie Hamilton (North Attleboro, Mass.) tallied her first goal of the year as she floated a shot into the upper left corner of the cage. Katherine Lawrence (Marlborough, Conn.) provided the assist on Hamilton's strike.
The Lions tacked on their sixth score of the opening frame in the 36th minute. Anastasia Swift (Morrisville, Vt.) poked in her first tally of the fall off of a feed by Libby Nyquist (Barre, Vt.).
Eastern Nazarene added a goal in the opening minutes of the second half. Bryant notched her second score of the contest with a breakaway effort in the 47th minute.
The home side posted its eighth tally of the day as Lawrence found the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season after Couite sent a cross into the center of the box.
Couite capped off her second hat trick of the fall in the 57th minute. Bryant rolled a pass across the top of the box and Couite rifled in a right-footed shot for her team-leading seventh marker.
Sophomore Gina Lozano (Mexico City, Mexico) bagged her first career goal after racing in on goal alone and lacing a right-footed blast into the bottom right corner of the net.
Wheelock got on the board in the 83rd minute as Courtney Adams drilled a direct free kick from just outside the penalty area into the back of the net for her third goal of the season.
Eastern Nazarene responded with a goal in the 86th minute as Kennedy Dowling (Nashua, N.H.) buried her first marker of the fall.
The hosts tallied their 12th score of the match in the closing seconds as Schmidt lasered a direct free kick past the Wheelock goalkeeper for her second strike of the season.
The Lions racked up 22 shots in the game while the Wildcats managed four attempts.
Griselda Minchaca (Whittier, Calif.) finished with one save on the afternoon and Laurianna Frasson (West Babylon, N.Y.) made her collegiate debut with 10 minutes of action between the posts and one save.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene resumes conference play at the University of New England September 24.
