Women’s Soccer Earns First-Ever Win Over Gordon Wednesday

WENHAM, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's soccer team posted a crucial 1-0 victory at Gordon on a wet and windy Wednesday afternoon. The result marks the first-ever win over the Fighting Scots in 18 matches all-time.

The Lions improve to 7-9-0 on the year and 4-3 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Fighting Scots fall to 11-5-0 overall and 4-3 in league play with the loss.

Eastern Nazarene and Gordon move into a tie for fourth-place in the conference standings with the Lions owning the head-to-head tiebreaker with just two matches remaining in the regular season.

The two teams remained knotted at 0-0 midway through the match.

The Lions held a 7-3 margin in shots through 45 minutes of play and a narrow 2-1 edge in shots on goal. The guests earned all three corner kicks awarded in the first half.

Eastern Nazarene scored the match's lone goal in the 77th minute to snag a 1-0 lead. Jules Speno (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) controlled a long pass from Alexis Schmidt (North Smithfield, R.I.) with her back towards goal. The senior took one touch before turning a firing a shot into the lower right corner of the cage for her third tally of the season.

The Lions' defense allowed just one shot in the final 13 minutes of the contest to preserve the shutout.

The visitors finished the game with 12 shots while the home side registered 13.

Speno paced Eastern Nazarene with four shots on the day and three attempts on target while Kelly Couite (West Bridgewater, Mass.) fired three shots.

Junior Kristen Farley (Westminster, Mass.) stopped all six shots that she faced in net for the Lions to collect her seventh victory and fourth clean sheet of the season. McKenzie Dion made five saves in goal for Gordon in the match.

Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene returns home to take on Nichols October 25. The Lions will honor the program's seven seniors prior to kick-off.
