Second-Half Tallies Propel Women’s Soccer Past Moravian, 2-0

QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene women's soccer team netted a pair of second half goals to pick up its first win of the 2014 campaign, defeating Moravian 2-0 Saturday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium in the squad's first home match of the fall.

The Lions improve to 1-3-0 on the year while the Greyhounds drop to 1-2-0 overall with the result.

The two teams headed into the halftime break knotted at 0-0. Eastern Nazarene outshot Moravian 9-1 in the opening 45 minutes of action.

Katherine Lawrence (Marlborough, Conn.) pocketed her first goal of the season in the 61st minute to put the home side ahead 1-0. Lawrence was off to the races on a breakaway after Hannah Scahill (Quaker Hill, Conn.) threaded a pass behind Moravian's back line. Lawrence dribbled just inside the penalty box before slipping a shot past the onrushing goalkeeper.

Scahill doubled Eastern Nazarene's advantage to 2-0 in the 79th minute. Rookie Kelly Couite (West Bridgewater, Mass.) tip-toed along the endline before slotting a pass back to Scahill unmarked in the box. The sophomore ripped a right-footed shot into the back of the net for her first marker of the year.

Goalkeeper Kristen Farley (Westminster, Mass.) turned in numerous key saves in the second half to protect the clean sheet, including racing off her line to disrupt the visitors' offensive attack. Senior defender Lauren Kett (Norwich, England) aided Farley by blocking two shots destined for an empty net late in the contest. Farley finished the game with three saves as she earned her first shutout of the season.

Jacqueline Zalis stopped three shots in goal for the Greyhounds on the day.

The Lions ended the match with a 12-8 gap in shots while each side earned one corner kick.

Up next, Eastern Nazarene continues the three-game home stand September 9. The Lions will host Suffolk at 4:30 pm in a non-league matchup.
