
Lawrence Lifts Women’s Soccer Past Western New England in OT Thriller, 1-0
QUINCY, Mass.- Freshman Katherine Lawrence (Marlborough, Conn.) netted the game-winning goal in the 95th minute as the Eastern Nazarene women's soccer team edged Western New England 1-0 in a nail-biter Saturday afternoon on Homecoming weekend at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The victory propels the Lions to 9-6-0 overall and 2-4-0 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Golden Bears drop to 8-6-2 on the season and 2-3-1 in league play.
The two teams headed into the halftime intermission knotted at 0-0. Eastern Nazarene held a 7-3 advantage in shots at the midway point of the match while Western New England owned a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.
Neither squad could find the back of the net in the second period as both sides rang a shot off of the woodwork.
Katelyn Cummings rifled a free kick on frame in the 71st minute, forcing Eastern Nazarene goalkeeper Kristen Farley (Westminster, Mass.) to parry the ball off of the crossbar. Avery Clark's follow-up attempt bounced just wide of the goal.
Tina Corey (Canterbury, Conn.) nearly broke the scoreless tie in the 87th minute but her header attempt ricocheted off of the right post.
At the end of regulation, the hosts sported a 23-12 margin in shots while the visitors held onto a 4-3 gap in corner kicks earned.
The Lions potted the golden goal in the 95th minute as Lawrence dribbled to the middle of the penalty box before firing a left-footed strike into the left side of the cage. The tally was Lawrence's eighth of the year.
Eastern Nazarene concluded the contest with 27 shots while Western New England generated 12 on the afternoon.
Farley finished the game with four saves between the posts for the home team. Briana Kubik stopped seven shots in goal for the Golden Bears on the day.
