Women’s Soccer Silences Salve Regina, 1-0

NEWPORT, R.I. – Sophomore Jules Speno (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) netted her team-leading ninth goal of the season in the 88th minute to lift the Eastern Nazarene women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory at Salve Regina Wednesday afternoon.

With the win, the Lions improve to 8-6-2 on the year and 5-1-1 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Seahawks stumble to 7-8-1 overall and 2-4-1 in league action with the loss.

The result marks the first-ever win over Salve Regina in program history.

After a scoreless first half, the hosts owned a 9-2 lead in shots and a 4-0 gap in corner kicks.

The visitors broke the 0-0 deadlock with just 2:11 remaining in the match as Speno found the back of the net for an unassisted tally.

Salve Regina finished the contest with a 21-11 advantage in shots while Eastern Nazarene held the edge in shots on goal, 5-3.

Freshman goalkeeper Kristen Farley (Westminster, Mass.) made three saves on the day to record her eight win and fourth clean sheet of the season between the pipes. Jacqueline McPherson stopped four shots in goal for the Seahawks.

"We played extremely well on the defensive side and we did a good job of applying pressure offensively while maintaining our shape defensively. I thought our defense did well to mark up their key players and limit their chances on goal," said head coach Steve Hamilton.

Up next, the Lions return home to battle Gordon at 11:00 am to kick Homecoming festivities at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
