Women’s Basketball Cruises Past Curry 70-37
MILTON, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's basketball team picked up its first victory of the season Saturday afternoon, topping Curry 70-37 in the Curry College Tip-Off Tournament consolation game.
The Lions climb to 1-1 on the year with the win while the Colonels slide to 0-2 overall.
Tia Torio (Manteca, Calif.) led the balanced offense with 11 points and nine rebounds. Seniesha Sekaquaptewa (Scottsdale, Ariz.) tallied nine points off the bench while Kyra Fleharty (Lewistown, Mont.) netted seven points. Hannah Walls (Santa Maria, Calif.) and Alyssa Cosio Murillo (Santa Barbara, Calif.) each chipped in with six points and four boards.
The hosts chalked up nine of the game's opening 10 points to establish a 9-1 lead with 6:16 left to play in the first quarter.
The visitors chipped away at the deficit and Sekaquaptewa drilled a buzzer-beating three-pointer to narrow the gap to 11-10 heading into the second frame.
Eastern Nazarene seized its first lead of the contest with less than four minutes remaining in the second period, 18-17, on a layup by Walls.
Stella Dulay (Santa Maria, Calif.) splashed a trey late in the quarter to give the Lions a 26-21 advantage at the halftime intermission.
The guests stretched the margin to double-digits with 5:14 to go in the third as Fleharty drained a three-pointer, 36-25.
Jenn Burnham (West Valley City, Utah) nailed a triple just before the horn as Eastern Nazarene carried a 50-29 lead into the fourth frame after outscoring Curry 24-8 in the third quarter.
The Lions poured in 20 points in the final period while limiting the Colonels to just eight points to secure their first win of the 2018-19 campaign.
Eastern Nazarene shot 42.1% from the floor and 38.9% from behind the arc on the afternoon. The Colonels finished with a field-goal percentage of 24.5% while connecting on just 3-of-12 from three-point distance.
