Softball Halves Midweek Twinbill at Simmons

BRIGHTON, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Simmons Wednesday. The Lions prevailed 3-0 in the opening tilt before dropping game two 9-1.

GAME ONE
THE BASICS:
Score: Eastern Nazarene 3, Simmons 0
Records: Lions (5-8) | Sharks (3-11)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• Eastern Nazarene broke a scoreless deadlock in the top of the sixth inning, scoring twice to seize a 2-0 lead. Bailey Olaveson (Lakeside, Calif.) roped a two-out single to right field to drive in Danielle Maliszewski (Torrington, Conn.) and Izabel Pozar (Flagstaff, Ariz.).
• The Lions added a run in the seventh to widen the gap to 3-0. Caoimhe Wernsing (Brockton, Mass.) singled to centerfield to knock in Cayley McCurdy (Smithfield, R.I.) from third base.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

• Caoimhe Wernsing (Brockton, Mass.) tallied two hits and one RBI.
• Bailey Olaveson (Lakeside, Calif.) collected two RBIs and one base knock.
• Danielle Maliszewski (Torrington, Conn.), Cayley McCurdy (Smithfield, R.I.), and Izabel Pozar (Flagstaff, Ariz.) all added one hit and one run scored.
• Abby Stansbury (Warren, Ore.) twirled a complete-game shutout and recorded a season-high six strikeouts.

GAME TWO
THE BASICS:
Score: Eastern Nazarene 1, Simmons 9
Records: Lions (5-9) | Sharks (3-12)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• Eastern Nazarene snagged an early 1-0 edge with a run in the top of the first inning. Izabel Pozar (Flagstaff, Ariz.) crossed the dish as Leah Saunders (Smithfield, R.I.) reached base on a fielding error.
• Simmons got on the board in the bottom of the first, chalking up three runs to claim a 3-1 advantage.
• The Sharks tacked on four runs in the fourth frame to extend their lead to 7-1.
• The home side scored twice in the fifth inning to wrap up a 9-1 win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

• Izabel Pozar (Flagstaff, Ariz.) notched one base hit and a run scored.
• Cayley McCurdy (Smithfield, R.I.) and Caoimhe Wernsing (Brockton, Mass.) each posted one base knock.
• Bailey Olaveson (Lakeside, Calif.) and Leah Saunders (Smithfield, R.I.) both finished with one stolen base.
• Cayley McCurdy (Smithfield, R.I.) tossed four innings and registered two strikeouts. Caoimhe Wernsing (Brockton, Mass.) worked two-thirds of an inning of relief.
