Softball Drops Two to Gordon on Senior Day
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College softball team absorbed a pair of setbacks to Gordon Tuesday afternoon at Mitchell/McCoy Field, suffering a 14-2 loss before falling 4-3 in extra innings.
The Lions slip to 18-18 on the season with the results while the Fighting Scots improve to 17-16-1 overall.
Before the doubleheader, the Eastern Nazarene softball program honored its seniors: Aurora Adams (Fullerton, Calif.) and Kiley Ozaki (Ewa Beach, Hawaii).
Bailey Olaveson (Lakeside, Calif.), Alex Schwenger (Danville, Calif.), and Ozaki all posted two hits, one RBI, and one run scored on the day. Adams chipped in with a pair of base knocks while driving in one RBI. Danielle Maliszewski (Torrington, Conn.) tallied two hits and scored one run.
In game one, Gordon cruised to a 14-2 victory.
The visitors snagged a 1-0 edge with a run in the top of the first inning. Isabella Rivera crossed the dish on an RBI groundout by Lily Rivera.
The home team leveled the contest at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame. Adams laced a two-out single to drive in Schwenger from third base.
Gordon reclaimed the lead with a pair of runs in the second, 3-1. Mara Little slapped a single to right field to plate Ami Rivera and Karissa Hatchell.
The Fighting Scots added three runs in the fifth inning to widen the gap to 6-1. Isabella Rivera scampered home from third as Emily Peterson swiped second base. Lily Rivera followed with a two-run home run to centerfield to knock in Peterson.
The Lions chalked up a run in the sixth to narrow the gap to 6-2. Olaveson crossed the dish on a groundout by Ozaki.
Gordon erupted for eight runs on eight hits in the top of the seventh to extend its advantage to 14-2.
Chelsea De Martini (Budd Lake, N.J.) tossed a complete game in the pitcher's circle in her ninth start.
In the nightcap, Gordon edged Eastern Nazarene 4-3 in extra innings.
The Fighting Scots notched a run in the top of the first to establish a 1-0 lead. Arianna Ramsaran bounced a single up the middle to plate Isabella Rivera.
The visitors doubled their advantage to 2-0 with a run in the second. Peterson singled down the first base line to knock in Little.
Eastern Nazarene got on the board in the home half of the second inning to cut the deficit to 2-1. Ashley Caldwell (Quincy, Mass.) roped a single to left field to drive in Ozaki from second base.
Gordon regained a two-run edge in the fifth, 3-1, scoring one run. Lily Rivera crossed the dish on a base hit up the middle by Emma DuBois.
The Lions rallied to produce two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to knot the contest at 3-3. Schwenger lasered a double to the gap in right-centerfield to plate Maliszewski. Jennelle Munoz (Lake Elsinore, Calif.) tagged up and motored home from third as Olaveson lifted a sacrifice fly to left field.
The guests tallied one run in the top of the eighth to capture a 4-3 lead. Ami Rivera scored the go-ahead run as Hatchell reached on an error to lead off the inning.
Munoz pitched eight innings and finished with five strikeouts.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene travels to Lesley April 29.
