Alejandro Garcia Fernandez Posts NCAA Division III Record 43 Kills as Men’s Volleyball Falls to SUNY Potsdam in Five Sets
QUINCY, Mass.- Sophomore Alejandro Garcia Fernandez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) set a new NCAA Division III single-match record with 43 kills as Eastern Nazarene College men's volleyball team dropped a 3-2 decision to SUNY Potsdam Saturday afternoon at the Lahue Athletic Center.
The Lions see their winning-streak halted at nine-consecutive matches and slip to 10-7 overall and 1-1 in the New England Collegiate Conference with the setback. The Bears improve to 9-11 on the season and 1-0 in league action with their fifth-straight win.
Ian Pacheco (San Pedro Sula, Honduras) recorded a career-high 12 kills to go with six digs. Jacob Zarges (Quincy, Mass.) chipped in with nine kills and seven digs on the afternoon. Aaron Huang (Quincy, Mass.) chalked up 58 assists and 11 digs for his second double-double of the year.
The home side eked out a narrow 25-23 victory in the opening frame to seize a 1-0 lead in the match.
Eastern Nazarene triumphed 25-18 in the second to double its advantage to 2-0.
The visitors claimed the third set 25-22 to cut the deficit to 2-1 before notching a 25-22 win in the fourth to knot the contest at 2-2.
Potsdam prevailed 15-13 in the winner-take-all fifth frame to lock up its fifth victory in a row.
Joe Zimmerman paced the Bears with 20 kills and added eight digs. Zaire Rogers tallied 11 kills and six total blocks on the day. Jason Hendler finished with nine kills and nine total blocks. Alec Roy registered 52 assists while Keven Sanchez collected 13 digs.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene will host NECC preseason-favorite Endicott March 15.
