
Men’s Tennis Earns Fourth at Stonehill Invitational
EASTON, Mass. – The Eastern Nazarene College men’s tennis team claimed fourth at the Stonehill College Invitational Saturday.
EASTON, Mass. – The Eastern Nazarene College men's tennis team claimed fourth at the Stonehill College Invitational Saturday. With nine points, the Lions edged out Bridgewater State, Roger Williams, Post and Salve Regina.
In the No. 1 singles bracket, Austin Steelman (Darlington, Md.) dropped his first round match in three sets to Nick Tadros from Post University. Steelman bounced back to claim the consolation final of the No. 1 singles bracket. The junior defeated Wesley Esthimer of Bridgewater State 8-1 and Will White of Wheaton College 8-6.
In the No. 2 singles flight, Sam McKay-Corkum (Rehoboth, Mass.) topped Bridgewater State's Matt McLeod 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round before falling to Wheaton's Dan Sharon in three sets in the semifinals.
Tyler Perron (Plympton, Mass.) rebounded from enduring a 6-2, 6-0 loss in the first round of the No. 3 singles bracket to capture a pair of wins en route to the consolation final title. Perron downed Post's Johnathan Young and Roger Williams' Ryan Swanson.
In the No. 4 singles flight, Kevin Paterno (Quincy, Mass.) advanced to the semifinals with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Ken McCormack of Salve Regina. Paterno was edged in the semifinal round 6-1, 6-7 (5), 13-11 by David Gassen representing Wheaton.
In the doubles competition, Timothy Luz (Cumberland, R.I.) and Nick Thompson (York, Pa.) suffered an 8-6 loss in the first round. The duo blanked Salve Regina's James Diamentopoulos and Monaf Awwa to reach the finals of the consolation bracket. Luz and Thompson fell 8-1 in the finals to Jason Pacino and Jonah Schwartz from Roger Williams.
