Men’s Soccer Suffers 2-1 Setback to Salem State in Season-Opener

NORTH QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Salem State Wednesday evening at Creedon Field in the first match of the 2023 slate.            

THE BASICS:
Score: Eastern Nazarene 1, Salem State 2
Records: Lions (0-1-0) | Vikings (2-1-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Eastern Nazarene snagged a 1-0 lead in the 41st minute. Dan Hill (Tewkesbury, England) bagged his first goal of the season while Bryan Vargas (San Jose, Costa Rica) picked up his first assist of the fall.
  • Salem State equalized in the 48th minute to pull even at 1-1. Landon Picillo knocked in his first collegiate tally as he poked in a loose ball inside the six-yard box.
  • The Vikings drew a penalty kick with two minutes left to play in regulation and Dylan Serna converted from the spot to net his first marker of the year to push the visitors ahead 2-1 in the late stages of the match.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Eastern Nazarene produced 14 shots in the contest while Salem State attempts 11 shots on the night.
  • Bryan Vargas (San Jose, Costa Rica) fired a team-high four shots and Emilio Magdon (Mexico City, Mexico) finished with three shot attempts off the bench.
  • Senior Erik Berg (Hadley, Mass.) tallied four saves in his first start of the season between the pipes.
  • Salem State owned a 5-3 edge in corner kicks earned on the night.
