Men’s Soccer Rolls Past Elms, 6-0
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College men's soccer team cruised to a 6-0 victory over Elms Saturday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Lions rise to 6-4-0 on the year with the win while the Blazers slide to 4-6-0 overall.
The home team opened the scoring in the 35th minute to establish a 1-0 lead. Mohamed Gouriche (Weymouth, Mass.) netted his first marker of the season as he poked a shot past the visitors' goalkeeper after a through-ball from Leonardo Castro (Katy, Texas).
Eastern Nazarene added its second score of the opening frame in the 38th minute to widen the gap to 2-0. Rookie Michael Frotscher (Tramin, Italy) buried his first collegiate goal as he knocked in a rebound after Castro drilled a shot off the right post.
The Lions controlled a two-goal advantage at the halftime break along with a 17-4 margin in first-half shot attempts.
The hosts tacked on their third goal of the match in the 58th minute to extend the lead to 3-0. Bryan Vargas (San Jose, Costa Rica) notched his team-leading fourth goal of the season, tapping the ball into an open net after dribbling around the goalkeeper.
Eastern Nazarene chalked up its fourth score of the day in the 61st minute to stretch the gap to 4-0. Vargas bagged his second marker of the contest to post a brace in consecutive matches, finishing a cross from Sheelens Ostine (Quincy, Mass.).
The Lions pushed their lead to 5-0 with a strike in the 70th minute as Gouriche collected his second tally of the afternoon.
The home side capped off the scoring in the 80th minute with it fourth goal of the second half. Rookie Guillermo Garcia (Leon, Spain) headed home his first career goal as Carlos Moya (Oviedo, Spain) and Castro each picked up assists.
Eastern Nazarene concluded the match with season-high 31 shots while limiting Elms to just seven attempts.
Sophomore Antonio Soto Valente (Maracaibo, Venezuela) logged 72 minutes between the pipes and registered three saves in his fifth start of the year. Sophomore Erik Berg (Hadley, Mass.) made his season debut, manning the cage for the final 17 minutes to preserve the clean sheet.
