QUINCY, Mass.- Junior Carlos Moya (Oviedo, Spain) tallied two late goals to propel the Eastern Nazarene College men's soccer team to a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over Wheaton in the season-opener at Veterans Memorial Stadium Wednesday night.
The Lions jump to 1-0-0 to begin the campaign while the Lyons slide to 0-1-0 overall with the outcome.
The two teams battled to a scoreless stalemate in the first half as Wheaton held a narrow 4-3 advantage in shots.
The visitors tallied the match's opening score in the 48th minute to seize a 1-0 edge. Luke Strange buried his first goal of the season as Alberto Franceschi provided the assist.
The home team rallied to produce a late equalizer in the final minute of regulation as Moya bagged his first goal of the year, curling in a direct free kick from just outside the 18-yard box to level the match at 1-1.
Eastern Nazarene notched the game-winning goal in the 100th minute to earn the victory. In the final minute of the first overtime period, Moya headed home the golden goal to collect his second marker of the contest as Bryan Vargas (San Jose, Costa Rica) registered his first assist of the fall.
The Lions concluded the match with 10 shots while Wheaton recorded eight attempts.
Senior goalkeeper Tyler Ferreira (Berkley, Mass.) made a pair of saves in his first start of the season between the pipes.
