Men’s Soccer Battles Past Pine Manor, Earns 11th-Consecutive Win
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College men's soccer team posted its 11th-straight victory with a 4-2 win over Pine Manor on a windy Wednesday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Lions, who are receiving votes in the latest D3Soccer.com National Poll, improve to 11-1-0 on the year with the result while the Gators slide to 8-2-1 overall.
The hosts nabbed a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute. Leon Zaffonato (Canela, Brazil) blasted a left-footed shot into the upper left corner of the cage to collect his seventh goal of the season. Stanley Elie (Roslindale, Mass.) picked up his first assist of the fall on the match's opening strike.
Eastern Nazarene extended its advantage to 2-0 in the final minute of the first frame. Bryan Vargas (San Jose, Costa Rica) notched his first collegiate goal as he redirected a cross delivered into the box by Sunil Lepcha (Charlotte, N.C.).
The Lions fired four shots in the opening half while Pine Manor produced six attempts.
The home side stretched the margin to 3-0 in the 50th minute. Edmilson Centeio (New Bedford, Mass.) headed in his second tally of the year, knocking in a corner kick delivered into the box off the boot of Zaffonato.
The Gators cut the deficit to 3-1 in the 56th minute. Oscar Uriel Roque registered his seventh goal of the season with a header off of a cross by Henry Garcia.
Eastern Nazarene regained a three-score advantage in the 76th minute. After Centeio's initial effort was saved, Charlie Swann (London, England) knocked in his team-leading 12th marker of the fall.
Pine Manor pulled to within two, 4-2, on a tally in the 86th minute. Yanes Seidi nodded in his fifth goal of the year as Felipe Flores provided the assist.
The Lions finished the game with 11 shots while the Gators generated 22 attempts on the night.
Junior netminder Tim Eddings (Endicott, N.Y.) made five stops in his third start of the season.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene resumes New England Collegiate Conference play October 16 at home against Dean on Senior Night.
