Men's Soccer Upended at Roger Williams, 6-1
BRISTOL, R.I.- The Eastern Nazarene men's soccer team suffered a 6-1 setback at Roger Williams Saturday afternoon.
The Lions fall to 1-9-0 overall and 0-4-0 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with the loss. The Hawks improve to 10-2-0 on the year and 2-2-0 in league matches with the victory.
Eastern Nazarene got on the board first, grabbing a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute. Scott Hansen (Middletown Spring, Vt.) tallied his third goal of the season as rookie Faries Gray picked up his first collegiate assist on the score.
The Lions headed into the halftime intermission clinging to a 1-0 advantage. Roger Williams fired 15 shots in the first half while the Lions registered three. Each team earned one corner kick in the opening frame.
The Hawks knotted the score at 1-1 in the 52nd minute as James Sheldon netted his fifth goal of the season. Trevor Sparda earned an assist on the tally as his cross from the right wing set up Sheldon.
The home side claimed a 3-1 lead with a pair of goals in the 56th minute.
Sparda headed a loose ball into the back of the net for his second marker of the fall after Scott Boucher served in a free kick to give Roger Williams a 2-1 lead.
Just 30 seconds later, Sheldon scored his second tally of the game as he knocked in a rebound off of the post.
The Hawks tacked on a goal in the 60th minute of play to stretch the margin to 4-1. Sparda's header off of a free kick by Daniel Caruso found the back of the cage for his second score of the day.
Sheldon notched his third goal of the game in the 65th minute to give the hosts a 5-1 advantage. Sheldon tucked a shot into the right corner of the goal as Andrew Carlson provided the assist.
Roger Williams capped off the scoring in the 86th minute as Jesse DiPietro fired home a long-range attempt. Jedu Armar picked up an assist on DiPietro's first goal of the season.
The Hawks finished the match with a 29-3 gap in total shots, including a 14-2 edge in shots on frame. The home team also owned an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks earned in the contest.
Jake Johnson (Mount Bethel, Pa.) stopped seven shots between the pipes for the Lions. Freshman Jameson MacFarland (Quincy, Mass.) made one save in 14:39 of relief action for the visitors.
Jon Pelloso turned aside one shot in goal for Roger Williams and Carsten Fredrickson closed out the match between the posts, logging the final 17:30.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene will look to snap a five-game skid as it hosts Mitchell October 9 in a non-conference tilt at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
