Baseball Collects Five All-NECC Nods; Ferguson, Rojas Earn Major Awards
MANSFIELD, Mass.- Junior Francis Ferguson (Jefferson, Mass.) and freshman Elvis Rojas (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) headlined the Eastern Nazarene College baseball team's five All-NECC selections, as the league office announced its end-of-season awards Tuesday. Ferguson was tabbed the NECC Pitcher of the Year while Rojas garnered NECC Rookie of the Year honors.
Joining Ferguson and Rojas on the All-NECC Team were Spencer Boynton (Tampa, Fla.) and Shane McNamara (Londonderry, N.H.). Ferguson earned All-NECC honors as both a pitcher and outfielder. Sophomore Nate Duncan (Boston, Mass.) was named to the NECC Del Malloy Sportsmanship.
Ferguson paced the conference with a 1.55 ERA and 82 strikeouts this season in nine starts on the hill. He boasts a 6-2 record with four complete games. In league action, the southpaw posted a 3-1 record and a 1.00 ERA in four starts while fanning 36 batters.
Offensively, Ferguson ranked second in the NECC with a .419 batting average and a .520 on-base percentage. He notched 44 hits, 30 runs scored, 24 RBIs, and 14 stolen bases this spring. In conference contests, Ferguson batted .450 with 18 base knocks, 10 RBIs, and 10 runs scored.
Rojas hit .373 on the year with 38 hits, 27 runs scored, 24 stolen bases, and 18 RBIs in 26 games played. He posted a .341 batting average with 15 hits, 10 runs scored, five RBIs, and four stolen bases in league games.
Boynton started a team-best 10 games on the mound and owns a 6-2 record with six complete games to his credit. In 60.2 innings of action, he ranked second in the league with 80 strikeouts. Boynton compiled a 2-1 record with 29 strikeouts.
McNamara has racked up 35 hits, 30 runs scored, 25 RBIs, and 20 stolen bases to go with a .307 batting average. In conference action, he batted .342 with 13 base hits, eight runs scored, six RBIs, and six stolen bases.
Eastern Nazarene sports a 24-12 overall record and posted a 6-6 mark in NECC play during the regular season to earn the No. 2 seed in the NECC Tournament. The Lions will face third-seeded New England College May 5 in the opening round of the NECC Tournament at Mitchell College.
