WEYMOUTH, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College baseball team collected a pair of victories over Plymouth State Wednesday afternoon at Libby Field. The Lions prevailed 4-1 as they resumed a suspended game from Saturday and claimed a x-x win in the series finale.
With the two victories, Eastern Nazarene improves to 3-0 on the season. The Panthers dip to 0-3 overall with the results.
Steven Pesce (Harrison, N.Y.) notched four hits, two RBIs, and a run scored on the day. Shane McNamara (Londonderry, N.H.) posted a pair of base knocks, one RBI, one run scored, and a stolen base. Ethaniel Almendarez (Lynn, Mass.) and Frank Landeiro (Orlando, Fla.) each chipped in with one hit, one RBI, and a run scored.
The opening game of the day picked up where Saturday's action was halted, in the top of the fifth inning with the Lions leading 2-1.
Eastern Nazarene had plated a pair of runs in the second inning to grab a 2-0 edge. Almendarez blasted a solo home run for his first collegiate base hit. Landeiro laced a double to right-centerfield to drive in Kelvin Cortez (Corona, N.Y.) with two outs.
Plymouth State cut the deficit to 2-1 with a run in the bottom of the fourth as Brian McGrath scampered home from third.
After McNamara smacked a double on the first pitch he saw Wednesday, Juan Jacobo Lopez (San Diego, Calif.) followed with a double to score McNamara to give the Lions a 3-1 advantage.
Eastern Nazarene tacked on a run in the seventh to widen the margin to 4-1. Pesce launched a two-out, solo homer to right-center for his first home run of the spring.
Morgan Weast (Cincinnati, Ohio) tossed a complete-game and surrendered three hits and one unearned run. The senior southpaw fanned a career-high 10 batters while issuing just two walks.
In the series finale, Eastern Nazarene edged Plymouth State 4-3 to remain undefeated.
The Lions manufactured three runs in the bottom of the third to establish a 3-0 lead. Pesce roped a double to drive in Luis Pina (Lynn, Mass.). Landeiro motored home from third on a wild pitch before Pesce crossed the dish on an RBI groundout by McNamara.
Eastern Nazarene added a run in the sixth to push its advantage to 4-0. Hernhy Lara (Boston, Mass.) raked a double to knock in Jaime Roldan (Boston, Mass.) for his first career RBI.
The Panthers plated three runs in the seventh to narrow the gap to 4-3. Danny Quinn, Tyler Wright, and Alex Rives all scored in the inning.
