Baseball Claims Walk-Off Win in Season-Opening Doubleheader against Plymouth State; Game Two Suspended
WEYMOUTH, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College baseball team earned a 5-4 come-from-behind, walk-off victory over Plymouth State in the first game of the 2022 campaign before game two was suspended Saturday afternoon at Libby Field.
The Lions improve to 1-0 on the year with the win while the Panthers dip to 0-1 overall.
Frank Landeiro (Orlando, Fla.) racked up four hits and four RBIs in his collegiate debut. Jaime Roldan (Boston, Mass.) collected two base knocks and scored a run. Steven Pesce (Harrison, N.Y.) delivered the game-winning hit and drove in the game-winning RBI in the season-opener. Kelvin Cortez (Corona, N.Y.) chipped in with a pair of runs scored.
The visitors snagged a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first inning. Bryan McGrath laced a double down the third base line to knock in Owen Baum.
Plymouth State doubled its advantage to 2-0 with a run in the second frame as Danny Quinn launched a lead-off homer to right field.
Eastern Nazarene manufactured three runs in the home half of the second to capture a 3-2 edge. With the bases loaded and two outs, Landeiro roped a double to right-centerfield to plate Tyler Bean (Wellington, Fla.), Cortez, and Roldan.
The Panthers reclaimed a one-run lead, 4-3, scoring twice in the third frame. Nick Healey landed a two-out single in center to drive in Luke Sokolski and Baum.
The Lions pulled even at 4-4 in the bottom of the fourth. Landeiro raked a two-out base knock to centerfield to score Brandon Guerrero (Boston, Mass.).
Eastern Nazarene clinched its first win of the season with a walk-off single by Pesce that drove in Cortez from third base.
Briley Seiter (Bellevue, Ky.) threw five innings and scattered nine runs in his first start of the spring. With seven strikeouts on the day, Seiter surpassed the 100-career strikeout mark.
Jon Tessier (Coronado, Calif.) hurled four scoreless innings of relief and fanned six to pick up the win.
In the nightcap, inclement weather suspended play in the top of the fifth inning with Eastern Nazarene clinging to a 2-1 edge.
Up next, the Lions will host Castleton February 26 in a doubleheader at Libby Field.
