Torres, Jiron Power Women’s Hoops Past Maine-Fort Kent 85-56
QUINCY, Mass.- Sophia Torres (Fort Mohave, Ariz.) and Janelle Jiron (Granada Hills, Calif.) each posted double-doubles to lead the Eastern Nazarene College women's basketball team to an 85-56 victory over Maine-Fort Kent Friday evening at the Lahue Athletic Center.
Torres racked up 26 points and 13 rebounds while Jiron notched 20 points and 10 boards. Sydni Oviatt (Fruit Heights, Utah) finished with 15 points and seven rebounds. Sabrina Zerbey (Tracy, Calif.) contributed with nine points and four assists.
The home team clung to a narrow 15-13 edge through 10 minutes of action.
Eastern Nazarene widened the gap to 13 points, 31-18, with 5:31 remaining in the second quarter on a bucket by Oviatt.
The Lions outscored the visitors 24-21 in the second frame to hold a 39-34 advantage at the break.
Eastern Nazarene posted a field-goal percentage of 34.1% in the opening half and drained 3-of-10 from long distance. Maine-Fort Kent shot 35.5% from the field and 33.3% from deep in the first two quarters.
Torres netted a team-high 14 points in the first half while Jiron and Oviatt each added 10 points.
The hosts stretched the margin to 56-38 with 4:04 remaining in the third as Te'yalla Simpson (Fairfield, Texas) knocked down a mid-range jumper.
The Lions sported a 62-46 lead heading into the fourth quarter after outscoring the Bengals 23-12 in the third period.
Eastern Nazarene chalked up the final eight points of the contest to secure its seventh win of the campaign.
The Lions shot 43% from the floor and connected on 5-of-21 from behind the arc on the night. Maine-Fort Kent finished with a field-goal percentage of 30.9% to go with 5-for-14 shooting from three-point range.
Jayonah Chaboya paced the Bengals with 23 points while Arieyle Baker registered a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene will head to Brandeis December 7.
