Women’s Basketball Falls in Overtime at Regis, 69-65
WESTON, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's basketball team absorbed a 69-65 overtime-loss at Regis Tuesday evening.
The Lions slip to 5-2 on the year with the setback while the Pride improves to 1-3 overall.
Sydni Oviatt (Fruit Heights, Utah) posted her second double-double of the season with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Janelle Jiron (Granada Hills, Calif.) registered her first double-double of the year with 12 points and 11 boards off the bench. Sophia Torres (Fort Mohave, Ariz.) netted 12 points while Alondra Jimenez (Santa Barbara, Calif.) chipped in with six points and six assists.
The home team pushed its lead to eight late in the opening frame, 17-9, and owned a 17-11 advantage heading into the second quarter.
The visitors battled back to capture a one-point edge with 7:19 remaining in the second period as Jimenez banked in a layup, 20-19.
Regis reclaimed a five-point lead with 5:15 left to play in the second on a layup by Pam Gonzalez.
Eastern Nazarene closed out the first half with a 9-2 run to control a 29-27 edge at the halftime break.
The Lions posted a field-goal percentage of 33.3% in the opening two quarters while connecting on jut 1-of-8 from downtown. The Pride shot 35.7% from the floor and 28.6% from beyond the arc in the first two frames
The hosts grabbed a four-point lead with 4:18 left in the third as Courtney Doherty sank a three-pointer.
The visitors pulled even in the final seconds of the third period on a corner-trey by Sara Ruzicka (Solon, Iowa), 39-39.
Regis regained a five-point margin with 6:18 on the clock as Gonzalez tossed in a layup, 47-42.
Eastern Nazarene clawed back to seize a 48-47 lead on a layup by Te'yalla Simpson (Fairfield, Texas) with 4:57 to go in regulation.
The Pride chalked up six unanswered points to claim a 53-48 advantage with 2:45 remaining.
The Lions cut the deficit to 53-52 as Oviatt sank a layup with 1:05 left to play before knotting the contest at 57-57 with 19 seconds to go on a three-pointer by Oviatt.
Regis outscored Eastern Nazarene 12-8 in the extra session to collect its first victory of the season.
The Lions shot 34.3% from the floor and 20% from long range on the night. The Pride finished with a field-goal percentage of 32.8% despite sinking 3-for-17 three-point attempts.
Gonzalez led the home team with a double-double in the game, scoring 29 points and gathering 14 rebounds. Arie Searcy also recorded a double-double with 14 points and 13 boards while Doherty contributed 12 points.
