Women’s Basketball Stymies Wentworth in 79-47 Win
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's basketball team coasted to a 79-47 victory over Wentworth Friday evening at the Lahue Athletic Center.
The Lions climb to 8-2 on the year with the win while the Leopards dip to 0-1 overall.
Tyra Davis (Houston, Texas) poured in a career-high 11 points off the bench. Courtney Barba (Pismo Beach, Calif.) finished with nine points while Sophia Torres (Fort Mohave, Ariz.) chipped in with seven points and eight boards. Janeth Cruz (Reseda, Calif.) and Alondra Jimenez (Santa Barbara, Calif.) both chipped in with eight points on the night.
The home team established an 18-6 advantage after the opening quarter and widened the margin to 38-18 after outscoring the visitors 20-12 in the second period.
Eastern Nazarene held a 20-point lead at the halftime break after shooting 53.1% from the floor and connecting on 1-of-4 from three-point territory in the first two quarters of action. Wentworth posted a field-goal percentage of 27.6% to go with 2-for-12 shooting from beyond the arc.
Nahatabaa Nacona (Chinle, Ariz.) and Moira Phillips (Middlesex, N.J.) led the Lions' balanced offense with six points each while Barba, Davis, and Torres each added four points.
The hosts exploded for 22 points in the third frame while limiting the Leopards to 11 points to extend their lead to 60-29.
Eastern Nazarene narrowly outscored Wentworth 19-18 in the fourth to notch its fourth-straight win.
The Lions' largest lead came with 1:55 remaining in regulation, 79-43, as Mya Landry (Derry, N.H.) knocked down two free throws.
Eastern Nazarene concluded the contest with a field-goal percentage of 50.8% while draining 5-of-8 three-point attempts. The Leopards shot 30.5% from the floor and 25.9% from long distance on the evening.
Kayla Kelley paced Wentworth with a game-high 16 points while Samantha Cormier registered 11 points and six rebounds.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene heads to Beantown to battle Wentworth in an exhibition game March 27.
