Women’s Basketball Breezes by Becker, 53-36
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's basketball team notched a 53-36 wire-to-wire victory over Becker Friday evening at the Lahue Athletic Center.
The Lions improve to 6-2 on the season with the win while the Hawks drop to 0-5 overall.
Janelle Jiron (Granada Hills, Calif.) scored a team-high 10 points off the bench and grabbed six rebounds. Courtney Barba (Pismo Beach, Calif.) finished with nine points while Alondra Jimenez (Santa Barbara, Calif.) hauled in a team-best nine boards. Janeth Cruz (Reseda, Calif.) netted eight points and Moira Phillips (Middlesex, N.J.) posted seven points on the night.
The home team held a 12-4 edge through one quarter of play and carried a 29-20 lead into the halftime intermission.
Eastern Nazarene shot 47.6% from the floor in the first half while connecting on 1-of-5 from three-point range. Becker sported a field-goal percentage of 31.8% at the break to go with 33.3% shooting from beyond the arc.
Phillips paced the Lions at the midway point of the contest with five points while Nahatabaa Nacona (Chinle, Ariz.), Cruz, and Jiron all tallied four points.
Both teams chalked up 10 points in the third period as the hosts clung to a nine-point lead, 39-30.
Eastern Nazarene stretched the margin to 20 with 2:12 remaining in regulation, 53-33, on a layup by Mya Timms (Phoenix, Ariz.).
The Lions registered 14 fourth-quarter points while limiting the Hawks to just six points in the frame to secure its sixth victory of the year.
The home team shot 42.9% from the floor on the evening despite draining just 1-of-10 three-point attempts. Becker closed out the contest with a field-goal percentage of 28.9% while shooting 31.8% from long distance.
Chloe LaPierre netted a game-high 19 points and gathered eight rebounds for the visitors while Jazyln Contreras added 12 points.
Prior to the start of the game, the Eastern Nazarene College women's basketball team recognized graduate student Courtney Barba who reached 1,000-collegiate-career points in the Lions' March 13 game at Babson.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene will close out the weekend series versus Becker March 20 on the road.
