Women’s Hoops Edges Mount Ida in Brandeis Tip-Off Invitational Consolation Game, 52-46
WALTHAM, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene women's basketball team notched its first victory of the 2013-14 season, defeating Mount Ida 52-46 in the consolation game of the Brandeis Tip-Off Invitational Tournament Saturday afternoon at Red Auerbach Arena.
The Lions elevate to 1-1 overall with the win while the Mustangs slide to 0-2 on the year.
Nicole Greer (Odenton, Md.) led Eastern Nazarene with 13 points and four steals off the bench. Michelle Herrera (Santa Barbara, Calif.) posted 11 points while Lucy Santos tallied 10 points and six boards in the win.
Tyshay Montgomery (Woodlawn, Md.) hauled in a team-high eight rebounds and six steals on the day. Jasmine Johnson (Los Angeles, Calif.) finished with seven boards and four steals while Abbie Tonello (Bourne, Mass.) recorded six rebounds.
The two teams traded buckets in the opening five minutes. The Lions used a 7-0 run to claim an 11-6 edge with 13:10 left to play in the first half.
Mount Ida responded with eight unanswered points to go ahead 18-15 with 3:37 remaining in the period. Eastern Nazarene posted seven-straight points to restore its lead to 22-18 with less than two minutes left to play.
Eastern Nazarene boasted a seven-point advantage at halftime, leading Mount Ida 27-20 after Katelyn Memory (Kiowa, Calif.) nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer.
The Lions shot 32% from the field in the opening period while the Mustangs connected on 29% of their shot attempts.
Greer, Herrera and Santos scored six points in the first frame to lead Eastern Nazarene at intermission.
Mount Ida netted the first nine points of the second stanza to grab a 29-27 edge 4:33 into the half.
The Lions answered with an 11-0 run to seize a 38-29 lead with 11:28 left to play in regulation.
The Mustangs cut the deficit to 38-36 with a 7-0 run at the midway point of the second frame.
After Eastern Nazarene called a timeout, Greer knocked down a jump shot and completed and-one play with a made free thrown to widen the gap to 41-36.
The Lions pushed their lead to double-figures with five minutes remaining on a lay-in by Ruby Leon (Fairfield, Calif.), 46-36.
Eastern Nazarene finished with a field-goal percentage of 30.6% on the afternoon. Mount Ida shot 32.8% from the floor in the contest.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene will host Framingham State at the Lahue Physical Education November 19 in the home-opener.
