Men’s Volleyball Sweeps NECC Weekly Awards
MANSFIELD, Mass.- Sophomore Alejandro Garcia Fernandez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) of the Eastern Nazarene College men's volleyball team has been named the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Player of the Week and freshman Jacob Zarges (Quincy, Mass.) has been tabbed the NECC Rookie of the Week, announced the league office Monday.
The pair helped the Lions to a 1-1 week to open conference play.
Garcia Fernandez posted 24 kills while adding nine digs, five service aces, and three total blocks as Eastern Nazarene edged SUNY Poly 3-2 in the first NECC match of the campaign. In the Lions' 3-2 loss to SUNY Potsdam, Garcia Fernandez set a new NCAA Division III single-match record with 43 kills to go with five digs, and a pair of aces.
This season, he leads the nation with 5.03 kills per set and paces the conference with 302 kills.
Zarges registered 11 digs and a pair of kills in the Lions' victory over SUNY Poly and tallied nine kills, seven digs, and four assists against SUNY Potsdam.
This spring, he has notched 72 kills, 61 digs, 19 service aces, and 12 blocks.
Eastern Nazarene sports a 10-7 overall record with a 1-1 mark in the New England Collegiate Conference. The Lions return to the court March 15 to host Endicott.
