Men’s Tennis Clinches Second-Consecutive GNAC Title, Bests Colby-Sawyer 5-1
WEYMOUTH, Mass.- The top-seeded Eastern Nazarene College men's tennis team defeated No. 2 seed Colby-Sawyer 5-1 Saturday afternoon to claim its second-straight Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) championship.
The Lions improve to 11-5 on the year while securing their second NCAA Tournament berth. The Chargers conclude the year with a 10-10 overall record with the result.
Carlos Sanchez (Malaga, Spain) was named the GNAC Tournament MVP while Avelino Parrondo (Madrid, Spain) and Simao Nobre (Lisbon, Portugal) were selected to the all-tournament team.
Eastern Nazarene notched a pair of doubles victories to establish a 2-1 lead after doubles.
Iago Alcover (Mallorca, Spain) and Carlos Gallardo (Tulua, Colombia) topped Jan Ullman and John Turner 8-4 at the No. 2 slot.
Nobre and Parrondo rolled to an 8-0 win at the third spot over Alex Edelmann and Charles Graffius.
Diego Rodriguez (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and Sanchez dropped an 8-6 decision to Julius Lowman and Aiden Jensen at the No. 1 doubles position.
Eastern Nazarene posted three singles victories to clinch the program's second GNAC crown, 5-1.
Parrondo cruised past Edelmann 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 position to widen the lead to 3-1.
Sanchez earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 4 singles slot over Turner to extend the Lions' advantage to 4-1.
Diego Torres (Weston, Fla.) locked up the victory with a 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 6 singles position over Cohl Schusler.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene will learn its NCAA Tournament opponent as the field is released May 9.
