Men’s Tennis Doubles Up Emerson, 6-3, in Season-Opener
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College men's tennis team defeated Emerson 6-3 Friday afternoon at the ENC Tennis Courts in the first match of the 2021-22 campaign.
Eastern Nazarene starts the year with a 1-0 overall record while Emerson dips to 0-1 with the result.
The visitors collected a pair of doubles victories to grab a 2-1 edge.
Iago Alcover (Mallorca, Spain) and Avelino Parrondo (Madrid, Spain) posted Eastern Nazarene's lone doubles win on the day, breezing by Daniel Kennedy and Cooper Sherman 8-0 at the third position.
Diego Rodriguez (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and Carlos Sanchez (Malaga, Spain) dropped a narrow 8-6 decision to Bass Lin and Ryu Watanabe at the No. 1 spot.
Carlos Gallardo (Tulua, Colombia) and Carlos Gomez (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) fell 8-5 at the No. 2 doubles slot to Maximo Lawlor and Pete Sevikul.
The home team rattled off five singles wins to lock up its first victory of the season.
Simao Nobre (Lisbon, Portugal) claimed a 6-3, 7-6 win at the No. 2 singles position over Lawlor.
Gomez cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Sevikul at the fourth spot. Sanchez notched a 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 5 slot over Kennedy while Parrondo picked up a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Sherman at the sixth position.
In the No. 3 singles match, Alcover overcame a one-set deficit to down Watanabe in a three-set battle. After conceding the opening set 6-4, Alcover rebounded to capture the second set 6-4 before edging Watanabe 7-6 in the third.
Rodriguez suffered a 6-4, 6-4 setback in a hard-fought match at the top singles position against Lin.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene will travel to Nichols September 22.
