Men’s Soccer Stymied at Salve Regina, 4-0
NEWPORT, R.I.- The Eastern Nazarene College men's soccer team suffered a 4-0 setback at Salve Regina Monday afternoon in non-conference action.
The Lions sink to 0-4-0 on the season while the Seahawks improve to 4-0-0 overall.
Each team produced a goal-scoring opportunity in the first frame but neither squad found the back of the net as the two sides were deadlocked at 0-0 at halftime.
Eastern Nazarene nearly got on the board in the 18th minute as Sunil Lepcha (Charlotte, N.C.) unleashed a shot that clanged off the post.
Salve Regina was awarded a penalty kick in the 32nd minute and Matthew O'Donnell's attempt missed the cage.
The Lions attempted eight shots in the opening half while the Seahawks fired 21.
The hosts opened the scoring in the 59th minute to grab a 1-0 lead. Conor Woods collected his first goal of the season as Donald Igo provided the assist.
Salve Regina doubled its advantage to 2-0 in the 70th minute. Owen Stevenson netted his first tally of the year while Jordan Elster recorded an assist.
The Seahawks tacked on a score in the 78th minute to widen the margin to 3-0. Evan McDonald buried his third goal of the fall off of an assist by O'Donnell.
The home side added a goal in the 85th minute to push its lead to 4-0. Woods notched his second marker of the match and O'Donnell picked up his second helper on the day.
Eastern Nazarene managed 10 shots in the game with just one attempt on frame. Salve Regina racked up 39 shots and held a 7-0 edge in corner kicks earned.
Junior Victor Mendoza (Cathedral City, Calif.) posted 11 saves between the pipes in his first start of the season. Rookie Tyler Ferreira (Berkley, Mass.) made his first collegiate appearance in net, playing the final 14:16 of the contest and stopping two shots.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene visits Lasell September 13.
