Men’s Soccer Bests Becker, Nets First Win of 2013 Campaign
LEICESTER, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene men's soccer team notched its first victory of the fall, downing Becker 3-0 on the road Wednesday afternoon. The Lions improve to 1-4-0 overall with the result while the Hawks remain winless at 0-7-0 on the year.
The win marks the Lions' first victory under first-year head coach Dan Visser.
Eastern Nazarene got on the board first, tallying a goal in the 15th minute to go up 1-0. Scott Hansen (Middletown Spring, Vt.) netted his first of the season as he slotted a shot past the Hawks' goalkeeper on a breakaway. Jacob Mason (Middletown, R.I.) sprung Hansen in on goal alone with a through-ball down the center of the pitch.
The Lions controlled the first 45 minutes of action, firing 11 shots while holding Becker to just one attempt. The Hawks owned a 3-2 edge in corner kicks earned at the break.
The visitors added a goal in the 53rd minute as Mason buried his second marker of the season. Luke Wooster (Quincy, Mass.) picked up his first career assist on Eastern Nazarene's second score of the match.
The Lions chalked up their third tally of the contest in the 73rd minute as Hansen found the back of the net for the second time on the afternoon.
Eastern Nazarene nearly scored its fourth goal just moments later but Pacifique Jabiro (Portland, Maine) saw his shot ring off of the post.
The visitors closed out the game with a 21-4 margin in shots, including a 16-0 gap in shots on target. The Lions also finished a 5-4 edge in corner kicks on the day.
Jake Johnson (Mount Bethel, Pa.) started the match between the pipes for the Lions and went 80:27 to earn his first win of the season. Rookie Jameson MacFarland (Quincy, Mass.) made his collegiate debut for Eastern Nazarene, playing the final 9:33 in goal.
Becker senior Tim MacDonald turned in a 13-save effort in goal for the home side.
Hansen recorded a game-high seven shots while Will Campbell (South Anchorage, Alaska) fired five for the visiting team.
The Lions resume league action as they visit Commonwealth Coast Conference foe Curry Saturday, September 21.
