Men’s Soccer Battles Springfield to Scoreless Draw

QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College men's soccer team tied Springfield 0-0 Wednesday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Lions progress to 3-5-2 overall while the Pride moves to 2-7-1 with the result.
The two sides engaged in an closely contested opening half as both squads recorded six shots. Springfield held a narrow 2-1 edge in corner kicks earned in the first frame.
The Pride amped up their offensive attack in the second stanza, firing 12 shots while Eastern Nazarene registered two. Both teams conceded a corner kick in the second half.
Springfield rang a pair of shots off of the crossbar in the second half. Danny Amato's attempt bounced off the crossbar in the 55th minute and Marco Callisto's 85th minute bid ricocheted off the woodwork.
The score remained at 0-0 at the end of regulation, forcing bonus soccer.
The Lions escalated their play in the offensive third of the field in the overtime sessions. The hosts sported a 6-2 lead in shots after the 90th minute.
The visitors finished the match with a 20-14 margin in shots while the two teams each earned three corners.
Sophomore Jake Johnson (Mount Bethel, Pa.) stopped all five shots he faced in goal for the Lions as he picked up his first shutout of the year.
Edgar Arceo (Minden, Nev.) and William Campbell (Anchorage, Alaska) paced the home side with four shots in the game.
The draw marks the second-straight tie for Eastern Nazarene as it tied Endicott 1-1 last time out.
Next up, the Lions travel to Springfield, Mass., to take on Western New England in a key conference matchup September 29.
