Men’s Soccer Stumbles on the Road at Salve Regina, Falls 5-1

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Eastern Nazarene College men's soccer team endured a 5-1 loss to Salve Regina Wednesday afternoon at Gaudet Field. The Lions slide to 2-3 on the season and 0-2 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with the result. The Seahawks remain undefeated with a 4-0 overall mark and a 1-0 league record.
The hosts struck first in the match, capturing a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute. Alex Wasilewski netted his third goal of the year to push Salve Regina ahead. Jacob Brigandi recorded his third assist of the season on Wasilewski's score.
Eastern Nazarene responded with an equalizer in the 13th minute to level the contest at 1-1. Edgar Arceo (Minden, Nev.) buried his second goal of the fall as Josh Kaplan (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) collected his second helper of 2012.
The Seahawks reclaimed the advantage in the 29th minute as Rainer Randell found the back of the net to lift the score to 2-1.
Salve Regina widened the margin to two goals in the 39th minute, pulling ahead 3-1. Andrew Chenard tallied his first of the season for the Seahawks, finishing a feed from Devin L'Heureux.
The hosts fired nine shots in the opening half while Eastern Nazarene recorded four. Both squads earned three corner kicks in the first frame.
Randell scored his second goal of the match in the 64th minute to extend the home side's advantage to three, 4-1. Zachary Kraft picked up his first assist of the year on Randell's fifth marker of the season.
The Seahawks deposited their fifth score on the afternoon in the 68th minute of play. Brigandi notched his first tally of the season while Issa Demirgioglu added the assist, his first of the fall.
The Lions finished the match with 11 attempts after the two teams each posted seven shots in the second stanza.
Sophomore Jake Johnson (Mount Bethel, Pa.) turned aside five shots in the contest for Eastern Nazarene. Daniel Stern made three saves between the pipes for the Seahawks.
The Lions will look to claim their first conference win of the season September 15 as they continue Commonwealth Coast action at Wentworth.
