
Women’s Volleyball Swept by No. 13 Tufts in NCAA Tournament First Round
MEDFORD, Mass.- The New England Collegiate Conference champion Eastern Nazarene College women's volleyball team absorbed a 3-0 loss to No. 13 Tufts in the NCAA Tournament first round Friday at Cousens Gymnasium.
The Lions finish the 2019 campaign with a 17-7 overall record. The Jumbos, ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Regional Rankings, improve to 28-1 on the season and advance to the round of 32 to take on Bowdoin Saturday, November 16 at Cousens Gymnasium.
Ruth Aguilar (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) posted nine kills, eight digs, and five assists on the night. Courtney McCarthy (Merrimack, N.H.) notched seven kills and four digs. Halle Julian (Whitman, Mass.) collected four kills while Samantha Caldwell (Quincy, Mass.) registered seven assists.
After a closely-contested start to the contest, Tufts established a 10-4 advantage with five-straight points. The Jumbos claimed a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-14 victory in the opening set.
The home team tallied 10 of the first 12 points of the second set to jump out to a 10-2 edge. Tufts doubled its advantage to 2-0 with a 25-17 win in the second frame.
The Jumbos opened the third with 11 unanswered points to construct a 11-0 margin en route to rolling to a 25-9 decision to lock up the victory.
Cate Desler recorded a match-high 12 kills and 13 digs to lead Tufts while Rachel Furash dished out 20 assists. Jennifer Yarwood posted nine kills and Christine Nwankpa chipped in with eight kills.
