Women’s Tennis Tops Regis, 5-4, in Conference-Opener
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis team finished off a 5-4 win over Regis in its first league contest of the fall Monday afternoon at the ENC Tennis Courts in a match that was halted Saturday due to rainfall.
The Lions climb to 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) with the win. The Pride falls to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play with the result.
Before the rain suspended the match on Saturday afternoon, the home team grabbed a 2-1 edge following the conclusion of doubles action.
Emily Ruttkowski (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany) and Magdalena Hubel (Berlin, Germany) downed Carly Donovan and Ariana McCormack 8-5 at the top doubles spot.
Sharon Biondi (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and Veronica Jimenez (Lynn, Mass.) rolled past Ginger Boodakian and Katelyn Mogelnicki at the No. 2 slot, 8-1.
Makayla Grantham (Apalachian, N.Y.) and Maria Busila (Malaga, Spain) absorbed an 8-3 setback at the third position to Lauren Mogelnicki and Kaitlyn Colby.
When play resumed on Monday, Eastern Nazarene picked up three singles wins to seal its first conference win of the season.
Biondi cruised pat Donovan at the No. 1 singles position 6-1, 6-2 while Ruttkowski earned a 6-3, 7-5 win at the second spot against McCormack.
Jimenez notched her third singles victory of the season as Regis' Boodakian retired midway through the first set in the fifth singles match.
Hubel fell in three sets at the No. 3 slot to Katelyn Mogelnicki. After dropping the first frame 6-1, Hubel battled back to claim the second 7-5. Mogelnicki clinched the win with a 6-1 decision in the third set.
Busila dropped a closely-contested match at the fourth position 6-4, 7-6 to Lauren Mogelnicki while Grantham suffered a 6-1, 6-1 setbck at the No. 6 slot to Kaeleigh FitzPatrick.
