Women’s Tennis Claims Season-Opening Victory at Curry
MILTON, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis team opened the 2019 season with an 8-1 win at Curry Tuesday afternoon. The victory marks the Lions' sixth-straight win over the Colonels.
The Lions start the year at 1-0 overall with the result while the Colonels dip to 0-2 on the fall.
Emily Ruttkowski (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany) and Magdalena Hubel (Berlin, Germany) posted an 8-3 win at the top doubles spot over Sophia Wiernusz and Alison Daigle.
Sharon Biondi (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and Veronica Jimenez (Lynn, Mass.) blanked Natalie Valvo and Sara Johnson 8-0 at the No. 2 position.
Maria Busela (Malaga, Spain) and Makayla Grantham (Apalachian, N.Y.) edged Samantha Gilbert and Kelsie Merrill at the No. 3 slot, 8-6.
Biondi bested Wiernusz 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 1 singles position. Ruttkowski and Hubel both cruised to 6-0, 6-0 victories at the second and third singles spots, respectively.
Busila notched a 7-5, 6-0 win at the No. 4 slot and Jimenez rolled past Gilbert 6-2, 6-0 at the fifth position.
Grantham fell in a third-set super-tiebreaker at the sixth singles slot to Merrill. After Grantham seized the opening frame 6-4, Merrill responded with a 6-3 decision in the second set before prevailing in the super-tiebreaker 10-2.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene hosts the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) in the first home match and first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) clash of the season.
