Women’s Hoops Endures First NECC Setback, Falters at Becker 70-58
LEICESTER, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's basketball team's 14-game winning-streak came to a halt Saturday afternoon with a 70-58 loss at Becker.
The Lions slip to 15-2 on the season and move into a tie for first place in the New England Collegiate Conference with an 8-1 mark with the outcome. The Hawks improve to 8-12 overall and 6-3 in league play with the win.
Kyra Fleharty (Lewistown, Mont.) posted her first double-double of the season, finishing with a team-high 15 points and 12 rebounds. Jenn Burnham (West Valley City, Utah) tallied 13 points while adding four boards and three assists. Stevie Orton (Gilford, N.H.) hauled in 11 rebounds, netted seven points, and dished out four assists on the day.
The home team constructed a seven-point lead, 14-7, with 2:04 to go in the first quarter as Riley Berry drained a three-pointer.
The visitors chalked up the final four points of the opening period to trail 14-11 after 10 minutes of action.
Becker extended its advantage to 26-15 with 6:04 to go in the second frame on a bucket by Sarah Ware.
Eastern Nazarene closed out the first half with an 8-0 run to trim the Hawks' halftime lead to 32-30.
The Lions posted a field-goal percentage of 32.4% in the first half to go with a 45.5% clip from behind the arc. The Hawks shot 42.4% from the floor and 4-for-9 from three-point range in the opening two periods.
The guests grabbed their first lead of the second half, 35-34, on a trey by Fleharty with 7:30 on the clock in the third quarter.
The two teams traded buckets before Becker capped off the third frame on a 6-1 run to control a 47-41 lead heading to the fourth.
Eastern Nazarene narrowed the gap to 53-52 on a layup by Orton with 3:45 left to play in regulation.
The hosts responded with eight-consecutive points to pushed the margin to 61-52 with 1:58 to go.
The Hawks converted 9-of-12 free throw attempts in the down the stretch to secure their second-straight win.
The Lions shot 25.9% from the floor and 29% from the perimeter on the afternoon. The Hawks concluded the contest with a field-goal percentage of 41.1% while connecting on 5-of-13 from beyond the arc.
Cassidy Harrison netted 20 points to lead Becker while Berry poured in 17 off the bench. Ware finished with 16 points and Natasha Pacheco registered 20 boards and seven points.
