Softball Drops CCC Series at Roger Williams Saturday

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Eastern Nazarene softball team endured a pair of losses on the road at Roger Williams, falling 10-4 and 7-1 at Paolino Field. The Lions dip to 6-21 on the season and 3-9 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Hawks improve to 13-13 overall and 11-1 in the league.
Senior Jamie Block (Pembroke, Mass.) led the visitors with four base hits on the day. Abigail Moore (Sheridan, Calif.), Sam Losano (Elverta, Calif.) and Olivia Tovar (Coarsegold, Calif.) all recorded a pair of base knocks and one RBI in the doubleheader.
In game one, Roger Williams captured a five-run advantage in the bottom of the first inning. Alana Peoples landed a two-run single in left to put the hosts on the board. Meghan Maliga doubled down the left field line to drive in three runs.
The Hawks tacked on four runs in the third to claim a 9-0 lead. Molly Petrone laced an RBI single up the middle and Lauren Tierney followed with a two-run triple to right-center. Veronica Alicea poked a single through the left side of the infield to plate Tierney.
Eastern Nazarene scored three runs in the fifth to cut the deficit to 9-3. Sterling Marino (North Kingstown, R.I.) picked up an RBI base knock to drive in Kori Sorensen (Quincy, Mass.). Tovar registered an RBI with a groundout as Britny Costa (New Bedford, Mass.) crossed the plate. Losano singled down the left field line to score Marino from third.
The Lions tallied a run in the sixth to slice the margin to 9-4. Kendra Brasil (Haverhill, Mass.) trotted home on a groundout by Costa.
Roger Williams responded with a run in the home half of the frame as Taylor Messier drove in Caroline Atkinson with a two-out single to right.
Sorensen tossed a complete game, working six innings in the pitcher's circle and fanning five.
In the second contest of the day, the Hawks notched a trio of runs in the second to grab a 3-0 edge. Peoples singled to right-center to score Delaney Burns. Petrone drove in a pair of RBIs as she singled down the line in left.
The home team added two runs in the third to take a 5-0 advantage. Alicea crossed the plate with one-out after knocking a single into left and stealing second base. Messier laced an RBI single back up the middle to plate Atkinson.
Roger Williams picked up a pair of scores in the fourth to stretch the gap to 7-0. Tierney and Alicea each registered an RBI in the inning while Maliga and Petrone both scored runs.
Eastern Nazarene posted a run in the fifth for its first run of the game. Carissa Cicolini (Methuen, Mass.) flared a single down the line in right and Moore followed with an RBI double to the gap left-centerfield.
Costa pitched a complete game for the visitors and struck out three batters.
The Lions will look to halt a seven-game skid as they travel to Springfield, Mass. to battle Western New England April 15.
