Baseball Sunk by Coast Guard Tuesday, 8-2
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.- The Eastern Nazarene College baseball team absorbed an 8-2 loss to Coast Guard Tuesday at the Ripken Experience.
The Lions dip to 5-3 on the season with the setback while the Bears improve to 4-1 overall.
Shane McNamara (Londonderry, N.H.) posted one hit, one RBI, and one run scored. Cam Barry (Manchester, Conn.) chipped in with a base knock and one run scored. Frank Landeiro (Orlando, Fla.), Elvin Smith (Boston, Mass.), and Matt Serrata (Ozone Park, N.Y.) all picked up base hits in the game.
Coast Guard produced a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning to claim a 2-0 lead. Blake Carroll belted a leadoff homer to centerfield before Wyatt Duthu doubled to drive in Cody Fidler.
The Bears added a run in the fifth to widen the gap to 3-0 as Justin Stasiak scampered home from third on a wild pitch.
Coast Guard generated three runs in the sixth frame to extend its advantage to 6-0. Blake George, Stasiak, and Nate Nam collected consecutive RBI base knocks.
Eastern Nazarene got on the board in the bottom half of the seventh to cut the deficit to 6-1. McNamara launched his first home run of the year, a solo shot to right-centerfield to lead off the inning.
The Bears responded with a score in the eighth to regain a six-run lead, 7-1. Nam singled to centerfield to knock in George with two outs.
The Lions tallied one run in the home half of the frame to trim the margin to 7-2. Barry came around to score on a miscue in the outfield as Luis Pina (Lynn, Mass.) laced a pinch-hit single.
Coast Guard chalked up a run in the top of the ninth inning to cap off the scoring. Parker Madden poked a two-out single to centerfield to plate Charles Red from second base.
Morgan Weast (Cincinnati, Ohio) tossed eight innings and registered five strikeouts in his third start of the spring. Dale Beneway (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) threw one inning of relief and notched a pair of strikeouts in his second appearance.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene returns to the diamond March 9 for a doubleheader against Montclair State.
