
Baseball Battles Past Gettysburg, 4-3, in Extra Innings
FORT PIERCE, Fla.- Playing bonus-baseball for the second-straight game, the Eastern Nazarene College baseball team topped Gettysburg 4-3 in 10 frames Monday in the second-ever meeting between the two clubs.
The Lions rise to 4-4 on the season with the victory while the Bullets fall to 0-5-1 overall.
Devin Haberstumpf (Forest Hills, N.Y.) collected a team-high three base hits on the day to go with one run scored. Steven Pesce (Harrison, N.Y.) landed two hits and drove in a pair of RBIs. Nick Story (Gilbert, Ariz.) chipped in with two runs scored, one hit, and one RBI. Joe Commesso (Marshfield, Mass.) added a pair of base knocks and crossed the dish once.
Eastern Nazarene captured a 1-0 edge in the top of the second inning as Story crossed the dish after Cameron Fiorentino (Uxbridge, Mass.) reached on an error.
The Lions doubled their advantage to 2-0 in the fourth. Story belted a lead-off home run to right field for his first homer of the spring.
Gettysburg trimmed the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Tate Frodsham singled to centerfield to drive in Brendan Wright.
The Bullets evened the contest at 2-2 in the seventh. Joe Giovinco scored on a base knock to centerfield off the bat of Connor Tom.
Eastern Nazarene reclaimed a one-run lead in the eighth, 3-2. Pesce laced a single up the middle to plate Commesso from third base.
Gettysburg leveled the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth. Chuck Probst drove in the game-tying run with a one-out single to right.
The Lions seized a 4-3 edge in the top of the 10th inning as Pesce delivered a two-out double to right to plate Haberstumpf with the go-ahead run.
In his second start of the season on the hill, Fiorentino racked up a career-high 12 strikeouts in seven innings of action. Alex Way (Syracuse, N.Y.) earned his team-leading second win of the year after hurling three innings of relief.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene is slated to host a doubleheader against Anna Maria March 16.
