Bio

The 1990 ENC Women’s Volleyball Team has one of the most outstanding records in program history. Under the leadership of head coach Dr. Nancy Detwiler and assistant coach Janet Calhoun, the Crusaders finished the season with an overall record of 40-4 after a trip to the NAIA National Tournament in Hawaii.

According to Dr. Detwiler, the 11 players were the most balanced team she ever coached. They worked together, supported each other, and had a terrific attitude. Melissa (Buchko) Emert was the top player in the area in aces. One of the strongest hitters on the team, Tricia Bradley-Seymour led with attacks. Rebekah (Corbin) Crofford was the team’s steadiest setter and a strong server, while Treasa (Gray) Zink was a solid player with exceptional skills as a defender. Crystal (Allison) Kline was a versatile player who contributed as a setter and outside hitter.

A premier passer, Jill (Caldwell) Dean possessed very quick hands at the net resulting in key hits and blocks. Julie Detwiler had the ability to read the ball and hit and pass accurately. Janelle (Nielson) Beiler demonstrated fundamentally solid back court skills. One of the most experienced members of the team, Sue (Puukila) Figueroa added leadership. Julie (Stahlsmith) Crosscut was an outside hitter who demonstrated all the needed attributes of an outstanding player. Julie (Stevens) Broderick showed a determined work ethic and put forth a tremendous effort.

Overall the players were fundamentally sound in basic skills, consistently performing them at a high level.
