Eastern Nazarene Announces 2014 Carroll F. Bradley Hall of Fame Inductees
QUINCY, Mass.- Eastern Nazarene College has announced the Carroll F. Bradley Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2014 inductees.
Former cross country standout Carl Burgess ‘90, former pitching ace Brad Mountain ‘07 and the 1990 women’s volleyball team will all be enshrined in the Carroll F. Bradley Hall of Fame.
The induction ceremony will take place Homecoming weekend on Saturday, October 18 in the Lahue Physical Education Center.
Carl Burgess ’90 – Cross Country
Carl Burgess transferred to Eastern Nazarene College in
the fall of 1986 from the University of Southern Colorado where he
also competed in cross country and track. He came to ENC with the
urge to run the New England terrain.
During his time at ENC, Burgess ran cross country for three years and travelled to Wisconsin each year to compete in the National NAIA five-mile run against the top harriers in the country. As a senior, Burgess captured first-place in the NAIA District Championship meet.
After graduation, Burgess coached the ENC men’s cross country team for six seasons from 1990 to 1995 and started the women’s cross country program in 1992.
He has worked for YMCAs in Quincy, Massachusetts, Charlestown, Massachusetts and Pueblo, Colorado. Since 1999, Burgess has been teaching elementary physical education in the Widefield, Colorado School District, and coaching track (since 1999) and cross country (since 2006) at Mesa Ridge High School. He notes, “I have many students that I taught from kindergarten to sixth-grade and then coached them for four years in high school. It is very rewarding to be a part of a student’s first school experience and then help them as they prepare for college.”
Burgess was also selected as a Teacher of Influence by the Mesa Ridge High School senior classes of 2007, 2008, and 2014.
Currently in Manitou Springs, Colorado, Carl is not far from his
parents, Stan and Anna, and his brother Mark, who also live in
Colorado. He stays busy lifting weights, camping, fishing and
kayaking.
Brad Mountain ’07 – Baseball
Brad Mountain came to Eastern Nazarene College with a mission to play baseball. His teammates described him as a hard worker, inspiring them to maximize their ability and showing them that if they wanted to take the game to the next level, they needed to put in the effort.
Mountain made ENC sports history March 21, 2006 when he threw a no-hitter in a home game against Massachusetts Maritime Academy. It was the first no-hitter in the program’s 47 years of play and the second highest number of strikeouts in a game as he fanned 18 batters. In a previous start against Wentworth Institute of Technology, Mountain carried a perfect game into the final inning. Although the first batter of the inning spoiled it when he led off with a single, Mountain pitched through to a victory.
Mountain owns program records for complete games pitched with 24, innings pitched with 273 and two-thirds, and strikeouts with 304 K’s.
He earned All-Commonwealth Coast Conference first team honors as a sophomore, junior and senior while also collecting honorable mention as a rookie. Mountain was also a two-time All-New England Region selection.
Mountain ranked nationally in each of his four years with the Crusaders: 18th in 2004 for victories, 17th in 2005 and 18th in 2007 for strikeouts-per-nine-innings, and 61st in 2006 for ERA.
Currently living in Collingswood, New Jeresey, Brad works for American Express as a Corporate Sales Manager. He keeps active playing baseball locally in New Jersey for a college summer league, coaching youth baseball, and participating in a growing inner-city church in Philadelphia called EPIC church. Brad enjoys spending time with his girlfriend Caroline, relaxing on the beach, playing golf, and hanging out with family, especially his nephew Trey.
1990 Women’s Volleyball Team
The 1990 ENC Women’s Volleyball Team has one of the most outstanding records in program history. Under the leadership of head coach Dr. Nancy Detwiler and assistant coach Janet Calhoun, the Crusaders finished the season with an overall record of 40-4 after a trip to the NAIA National Tournament in Hawaii.
According to Dr. Detwiler, the 11 players were the most balanced team she ever coached. They worked together, supported each other, and had a terrific attitude. Melissa (Buchko) Emert was the top player in the area in aces. One of the strongest hitters on the team, Tricia Bradley-Seymour led with attacks. Rebekah (Corbin) Crofford was the team’s steadiest setter and a strong server, while Treasa (Gray) Zink was a solid player with exceptional skills as a defender. Crystal (Allison) Kline was a versatile player who contributed as a setter and outside hitter. A premier passer, Jill (Caldwell) Dean possessed very quick hands at the net resulting in key hits and blocks. Julie Detwiler had the ability to read the ball and hit and pass accurately. Janelle (Nielson) Beiler demonstrated fundamentally solid back court skills. One of the most experienced members of the team, Sue (Puukila) Figueroa added leadership. Julie (Stahlsmith) Crosscut was an outside hitter who demonstrated all the needed attributes of an outstanding player. Julie (Stevens) Broderick showed a determined work ethic and put forth a tremendous effort.
Overall the players were fundamentally sound in basic skills, consistently performing them at a high level.
