NEW YORK, N.Y.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's volleyball team opened the season with a pair of setbacks to New York University and York (Pa.) Friday afternoon at NYU's Brooklyn Athletic Facility.
The Lions move to 0-2 on the year with the results while the Violets improve to 1-0 and the Spartans jump to 1-0 overall.
Ruth Aguilar (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) posted 15 kills and added six digs, five aces, and four assists on the day as she made her collegiate debut. Courtney McCarthy (Merrimack, N.H.) finished with 11 kills, seven digs, and three service aces. McKenzie Walling (Rock Hill, S.C.) chipped in with 13 digs while Samantha Caldwell (Quincy, Mass.) notched 22 assists and seven digs.
In the opening match of the campaign, Eastern Nazarene fell 3-0 to New York University in the first contest of the campaign.
The visitors dropped the first frame 25-17 as New York University grabbed a 1-0 lead. In a back-and-forth second set, the Violets edged the Lions 25-23 to widen the gap to 2-0. New York University capped off the sweep with a 25-11 victory in the third.
Eastern Nazarene wrapped up the tri-match with a 3-0 loss to York (Pa.).
The Lions trailed by a set after falling 25-18 in the first set to the Spartans. York claimed the second 25-16 to double its advantage to 2-0. The Spartans prevailed 25-20 in the third frame to seal the win.
