Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Mass. Maritime, Mitchell in Season-Opening Tri-Match

QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's volleyball team began its 46th year of competition with a pair of victories, downing Massachusetts Maritime Academy 3-0 and Mitchell 3-0 Saturday afternoon at the Lahue Physical Education Center in the first matches of head coach Kaylee Hewitt's coaching career.

The Lions improve to 2-0 on the year while the Buccaneers sink to 0-1 overall and the Mariners move to 1-1.

In the first match of the day, the Lions prevailed 25-14 in the first set before edging Massachusetts Maritime 26-24 in the second frame. Eastern Nazarene closed out the win with a 25-13 decision in the third game.

Rookie Courtney McCarthy (Merrimack, N.H.) racked up 10 kills and 10 digs in her first collegiate match. Lauryl Berger (Laurel, Del.) dished out 20 assists to go with six digs while Joanna Joseph (Brockton, Mass.) chipped in with seven kills.

Eastern Nazarene capped off the day with a three-set sweep of Mitchell.

McCarthy paced the hosts with eight kills while adding four digs. Joseph finished with six kills while Berger recorded 13 assists and six kills in the win.

The Lions captured 25-19 victories in the first two sets before securing the win with a 25-14 decision in the third game.

McCarthy posted 18 kills on the day and 14 digs while Berger totaled 33 assists and Joseph contributed with 13 kills.

"Two wins are an awesome way to start off the season. Our back row came out determined and serve received well very well. Our goal was to compete and get better today. I believe we accomplished that goal," commented Hewitt.

Up next, Eastern Nazarene visits Lesley for a midweek non-conference matchup September 7.
