The Lions fall to 9-4 overall and 1-1 in league action with the loss. The Hawks rise to 8-3 on the season and 2-0 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference.
Eastern Nazarene was led by Cayla Clinkscale (Winchendon, Mass.) with eight kills on the day. Kortney Jenkins (Bunker Hill, W.V.) tallied seven kills in the match while Birdina Tuiava (Colorado Springs, Colo.) recorded 24 assists. Defensively, Kori Sorenson (Quincy, Mass.) posted a match-high 14 digs.
Roger Williams was paced by Krystie Luczynski with 12 kills to lead all players. Alexa Armenti, Emily Lebowitz and Nicole Weber all dished out double-digit assists for the Hawks.
The visitors edged the Lions in the opening frame 29-27.
After falling behind 4-7 early on, Eastern Nazarene battled back to knot the set at 8-8. The Lions grabbed the lead at 11-10 and pushed the margin to six, 20-14.
The Hawks clawed back to level the game at 24-24 before Clinkscale unleashed a kill down the line to give the home team its second set point but the visitors tied the score at 25-25. Sorenson landed a precisely placed ball on the sideline to lift Eastern Nazarene to a one-point lead.
Roger Williams would fight off a third set point before claiming the game 29-27.
The Hawks seized an early advantage in the second stanza, extending the gap to five, 10-5. The Lions used a 12-8 stretch to narrow the deficit to one, 23-22.
Eastern Nazarene knotted the game at 24-24 as Hannah Welsh (Derry, N.H.) picked up one of her five kills on the day. The hosts captured the lead for the first time in the set, tallying the next point to claim a 25-24 edge.
The visitors scored the next three points to finish the set 27-25 and to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The opening stages of the third frame were closely contested, featuring six ties. Roger Williams jumped ahead 8-9 and would not relinquish the lead en route to its second league victory of the season.
The Lions return to action September 22 as they host a non-conference tri-match with Babson and Becker.
