Women’s Tennis Falls at St. Joseph (Conn.) in GNAC Tournament First Round
HARTFORD, Conn.- The fifth-seeded Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis team suffered a 5-1 setback at the No. 4 seed University of Saint Joseph Wednesday in the first round of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament.
The Lions wrap up the fall season with a 2-9 overall record while the Blue Jays improve to 6-6 on the year and advance to the GNAC semifinals.
The home side constructed a 2-1 lead with a pair of doubles victories.
Krista Signs (Mashpee, Mass.) and Mya Landry (Derry, N.H.) earned the visitors' lone win as the duo prevailed 7-3 in a tiebreaker to edge Julia Michaud and Maria Porth 8-7 at the No. 3 doubles spot.
Maria Busila (Malaga, Spain) and Katie Cawthorne (Norwell, Mass.) dropped a narrow 8-6 decision at the top position to Kathleen Gilland and Emily Kerr.
Jenna Schlosser (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Kari Bollinger (Alton Bay, N.H.) absorbed an 8-0 loss to Elaina Griffiths and Ananya Srivatsav at the No. 2 slot.
Saint Joseph claimed three singles wins to clinch the match.
Schlosser fell 6-0, 6-0 at the second singles position to Kerr. Bollinger endured a 6-1, 6-3 setback at the No. 3 spot to Griffiths. Signs absorbed a 6-0, 6-0 loss at the fifth slot to Michaud.
Busila, Cawthorne, and Madison Rearick (Londonderry, N.H.) all owned one-set leads at the moment the match reached a decision.
Eastern Nazarene will resume the 2021-22 campaign in the spring.
