Women’s Tennis Drops Regular-Season Finale at St. Joseph (Conn.), 6-3
HARTFORD, Conn.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis team suffered a 6-3 setback at the University of Saint Joseph Saturday in the final regular season contest.
The Lions progress to 2-8 on the year and 2-4 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) with the result. The Blue Jays improve to 4-6 overall and 3-3 in league action with the win.
Krista Signs (Mashpee, Mass.) and Mya Landry (Derry, N.H.) earned the visitors' lone doubles victory, prevailing 8-6 at the No. 3 position over Julia Michaud and Maria Porth.
Maria Busila (Malaga, Spain) and Katie Cawthorne (Norwell, Mass.) narrowly fell at the top doubles spot, 8-6, to Kathleen Gilland and Emily Kerr.
Jenna Schlosser (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Kari Bollinger (Alton Bay, N.H.) absorbed an 8-1 loss at the No. 2 slot to Elaina Griffiths and Ananya Srivatsav.
The home team collected four singles wins to lock up the crucial conference victory.
Busila rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 1 singles position over Gilland.
Cawthorne notched her team-leading fifth singles victory of the season, topping Srivatsav 6-0, 6-4 at the No. 4 spot.
Schlosser and Bollinger each fell in straight sets at the second and third slots, respectively, while Signs suffered a 6-2, 6-0 setback at the No. 5 position.
Madison Rearick (Londonderry, N.H.) was edged in a third-set super-tiebreaker at the No. 6 spot against Jenna Griffith. After dropping the first set 6-4, Rearick rebounded to claim the second set 6-0 before Griffith eked out an 11-9 decision in the super-tiebreaker.
After finishing the regular season with a 2-4 conference record, Eastern Nazarene earns the No. 5 seed in the GNAC Tournament and will travel back to the University of Saint Joseph October 13 for a first-round playoff match.
