Women’s Tennis Narrowly Falls to Roanoke, 5-4
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis team endured a tight 5-4 loss to Roanoke Tuesday in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
The Lions slip to 12-4 on the year while the Maroons improve to 2-2 overall with the result.
Roanoke grabbed a 2-1 edge with a pair of doubles wins.
Sharon Biondi (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and Veronica Jimenez (Lynn, Mass.) notched Eastern Nazarene's lone doubles victory with an 8-2 win over Carolyn Kitsock and Madeline Herring at the No. 2 position.
Magdalena Hubel (Berlin, Germany) and Emily Ruttkowski (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany) dropped an 8-3 decision at the top slot to Lucy Collins and Jessica Kennedy.
The Maroons picked up three victories in singles action to eke out a 5-4 win.
Biondi bested Kennedy 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 1 singles spot to improve to 13-3 on the year.
Ruttkowski remained unbeaten on the season in singles play as she outlasted Kitsock in a third-set super-tiebreaker at the second slot. After dropping the first set, 6-3, Ruttkowski battled back to captured the second frame 6-3. In the third-set super-tiebreaker, Ruttkowski prevailed 10-5 to rise to 15-0 in singles matches.
Hubel collected her 12th singles win of the season with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Collins at the No. 3 position.
Jimenez and Makayla Grantham (Apalachian, N.Y.) suffered straight-set setbacks at the fourth and fifth singles spots, respectively.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene is slated to battle Bridgewater (Va.) March 4.
