Women’s Tennis Storms Past Saint Joseph (Conn.) 8-1
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis team returned to the win-column with an 8-1 victory over the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) Tuesday afternoon at the ENC Tennis Courts.
The Lions climb to 5-2 on the season and 3-1 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) with the win. The Blue Jays fall to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in league action with the result.
The home team jumped ahead 2-1 with a pair of doubles victories.
Emily Ruttkowski (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany) and Magdalena Hubel (Berlin, Germany) downed Jessica McAllister and Elaina Griffiths 8-4 at the No. 1 doubles position.
Sharon Biondi (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and Veronica Jimenez (Lynn, Mass.) rolled past Marie Emerson and Carolyn Callahan at the No. 2 spot 8-1.
Maria Busila (Malaga, Spain) and Makayla Grantham (Apalachian, N.Y.) dropped an 8-4 decision at the third slot to Emily Kerr and Domonique Carnot.
Eastern Nazarene swept the six singles matches to secure the victory and snap its two-match skid.
Biondi bested McAllister 6-2, 6-0 at the top singles position while Ruttkowski cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Carnot at the No. 2 spot to remain unbeaten in singles play on the year.
Hubel posted a 6-1, 6-4 victory at the No. 3 slot against Griffiths and Busila breezed by Kerr 6-1, 6-1 in the fourth singles match.
Jimenez topped Callahan 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 5 position and Grantham earned a 6-4, 6-1 win over Elke Moser Melis at the sixth spot to collect her first singles victory of the fall.
